Gonzalez (Oak Cliff)

Sometimes you just want good old-fashioned Tex-Mex “comfort” food. You don’t want fancy, you don’t want trendy, you don’t want “cutting edge.” Since 1973, Gonzales Restaurant has delivered, and it’s popularity with local residents (yes, you may have to stand in line!) proves it.

Located in the old "Jefferson Tower" building (on the north side of Jefferson, between Madison and Bishop Avenues) the atmosphere is clean, bright and lively; sure to cheer you up on a dreary winter day (as it did me).

Prompt, pleasant service is matched by simple, time-tested recipes. The flour tortillas have been noted as exceptional by other publications (and I can attest to their taste!). I will also note that their refried beans are “lick-the-plate” delicious! I love the fact that they aren’t completely pureed but still have beans left whole, which adds to the texture.

The complimentary bowl of tostadas (“chips” to you gringos!) are accompanied by a mild red salsa which is - unusually - served warm.

Bonus 1: you can get breakfast all day!
Bonus 2: they have a second location, which I will have to check out soon!
