50,000 old and out-of-print books located in a historic, 100 year old building. Barber's Bookstore, also known as Back Door Books, was founded in 1925. They have used & rare books. Some sections include Texana, military history, nautical & exploration, Civil War, art, cookbooks, detective stories, sci fi, hunting, fishing, children's, fine bindings & rare.
The building that Back Door Books is in was around long before the bookstore opened. At one point, the building housed a saloon and brothel. Current tenants of the building saying that some of the former residents still call the building home. The owner, Mr. Perkins, has been quoted in several news articles as having experienced paranormal activity.
Mr. Perkins opened Back Door Books (Barber's then) in the sixties. He remained open until the late nineties. However, like any true book lover, he couldn't shake the monkey off his back. He continued collecting books until he had amassed more than 50,000. Part of the building the book store was in has become a cafe and so now, all those books are piled in a space that's half of what's needed. It makes the experience like looking for a treasure. There is a selection of fiction but, most of the books found here are unusual or non-fiction.
