85°C Bakery Café

In 2004, 85°C Bakery Café began with the philosophy of 5-stars quality at affordable prices. If that was their goal, they succeeded. This Carrollton's gem is quickly becoming one of our city's favorite spots for pastries.

I became addicted to this place when a friend brought me a cream puff and a milk pudding, traditional Japanese style soft bread with Vanilla Pudding inside. The following day, I was brought spicy green onion chicken bread, along with an amazing creation called a chocolate chip bowl.

I was amazed how reasonably priced the items were in this coffee shop/bakery. The ambiance is modern and welcoming; the staff is friendly and knowledgeable. I continued to wonder how and why this coffee shop provided finer pastries, breads and beverages at a lower cost than its competitor Starbucks.

I did a little research and love how and why this establishment came to be.   Owner and creator of this appetizing bakery is Taiwan-born Wu Cheng-Hsueh. Wu had humble beginnings. He was a high school dropout who worked 16-hour factory shifts to save enough money to purchase his first venture. Eventually, Wu returned to school and he received his MBA from the National Taiwan University of Science & Technology.

Wu experienced success and failures, but his bright coffee and bakery idea beat all other endeavors. He first built the business by sourcing good coffee beans. In 2004, Wu found the source of Starbucks’ most popular roast. Wu persuaded the Guatemalan supplier to sell him virtually all their Arabica coffee beans.

Next, Wu found outstanding chefs, like Henry Cheng, from five-stars hotels, Grand Hyatt Taipei and the Agora Garden. Henry Cheng was a winner of the international cooking competitions in Singapore and other countries. Together, Wu and Henry created a menu that one would experience in a fine dining setting. They wanted to offer an affordable five-stars menu to the masses.
This place is a must for any and all of your fall gatherings.
