The Downtown Mini Mall opened on the historic Denton town square in 1980 and became so popular that the Downtown Mini Mall II was opened a few store fronts down in 1995. Unfortunately, the original burned down shortly after Christmas last year, no injuries but, the building was a complete loss. Luckily for us, the Downtown Mini Mall II is still thriving.
If you ever wondered what the love child of a Flea Market/Bazaar/Antique shop matchup would be...Downtown Mini Mall II is your answer. A former writer for the UNT Press described the setup for both stores like this, "Walking into the Downtown Mini Mall, is like crawling through a storage unit of the past ten decades. Stuff is nonsensically stacked in, on and around more stuff."
DMM II is divided into sections and each section is owned by a different seller who receives a commission on anything sold with their special tag.
This is the kind of place for people who like scavenger/treasure hunts. There is so much to look at, all strategically placed to be visible in a tight space. Looking into some of the individual booths is like looking at a Where's Waldo picture, everything is fighting for your attention at once.
At the DMM II something could be found from almost any generation/decade for the last 100 years. There's kitsch-y jewelry from local artists in one booth and nostalgic farm life decor in the next. Antique baseball cards and comics, original My Little Pony figurines next to their modern couterparts, dishes, games and tacky gifts were just a few things I found on my walk-through.
This is something you definitely need to allot a few hours to an afternoon for. The building is about the size of a grocery store but, with all the merchandise there is to look at it feels like an actual mall.
